Hardin Co, OH Query I am seeking information on my Swiss ancestors who settled in Kenton, Hardin Co, Oh. Samuel KUMLI m Elizabeth BOHNER 3 Oct 1838, Herzogenbuchsee, Bern, Switzerland (possibly, Elizabeth went by the name of Mary). Mary Elizabeth KUMLI, b 15 Oct 1839, Bern, Ch; m Nicholas KOOP and they had at least one daughter. Mary d 25 May 1909, Lagro, Wabash, In. Mary's death certificate states that Samuel and Mary KUMLEY were her parents. Jakob KUMLI, b 3 Apr 1843; bap 16 Apr 1843, Oberbipp, Bern, Ch. Parents: Samuel KUMLI, son of Samuel from Wolfisberg, Bern, Ch and Elizabeth BOHNER, dau of Johannes, from Wiedlisbach, Bern, CH. Godparents: Jakob KANZIG, Johannes OBI, and Maria TSCHUMI. Jacob d 5 Sep 1919, Lagro, Wabash, In. His father is stated as Samuel KUMLEY and his mother as unknown (informant: William Tell KUMLEY, Jacob's son) Family tradition: Samuel and Mary immigrated to America with the above two children in 1851. These children were not related (I would like proof). I would also like to find out the name of the ship they sailed on. Jacob KUMLEY enlisted in the Civil War in Nov 1861 in Kenton, Hardin, Oh. His nearest relative was listed as John MARTY/MARTZ, who resided in Kenton. I never thought of Jacob living in Hardin County, because there were about 5 counties that signed up for the enlistment, and Hardin Co wasn't one of them. Jacob Kumley Company B Reg 82 Infantry Volunteer (1861-1865) Nobody knew what happened to Samuel and Mary, the parents, after they arrived in America, and I just found out recently (from researchers on the Internet!) that Samuel settled in Kenton and he married Susan STRAHM 27 Aug 1852, Hardin Co, Oh; KUMLEY was spelled "COMLEY" on his and Susan's marriage record (apparently Mary, his first wife died soon after immigrating). Samuel, Jacob's father, died just 2 months before Jacob enlisted in the war, so I guess that explains the name MARTY/MARTZ in his enlistment papers as the nearest closest relative ( Susan was married 2 months after Samuel's death?). After Jacob's Civil War service (1861-1865), he moved to Wabash Co, In where his marriage to the above Mary Elizabeth (KUMLEY) KOOP is found (Wabash Co Marriage Records, Book 6, page 467); they were married 29 Oct 1866. Jacob and Mary had 2 children: William Tell KUMLEY (b 10 May 1869, Lagro, Wabash, IN; d 17 Aug 1933, Wabash, Wabash, In), and Joseph Kumley, b 1873 (apparently died very young). William Tell m1) 21 Nov 1900, Wabash Co, In to Alta E. MCCLURE; they divorced in 1905; no children m2) 6 Jan 1906, Huntington Co, In to Clara Maude WINTRODE; William and Clara had 11 children with 9 growing to adulthood. My Mother, Mary Elizabeth KUMLEY (1910-1987) was the second-born; there are still 5 living. If there is anyone reading this and knows anything about this family, I would certainly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks! Yvonne Grimmer

Samuel KUMLEY/KUMLI: 1851: immigrated from Bern, Switzerland to Kenton, Hardin Co, OH with his wife, (Mary) Elizabeth (BOHNER) KUMLEY and son, Jacob KUMLEY. I need the name of the ship they sailed on. 1852, 27 Aug: Samuel m Susan STRAHM; his name is listed as Samuel COMLEY/CORLEY on his marriage record. Possible names of children of this marriage: John, Elizabeth, Samuel, Mary ... 1861, 28 Sep: Samuel KUMLEY died, Cessna Twp, Hardin Co, OH. Where was he buried? 1861, 29(?) Nov: Jacob KUMLEY enlisted in the Civil War: OH Company B 82nd Regiment, Infantry Volunteer. His closest living relative was listed as John MARTY/MARTZ (Susan's husband). 1909: Susan MARTY/MARTZ died; where is she buried? I would like to hear from anyone connected to this family, please! Jacob was my great-grandfather. I received a lot of wonderful clues from a branch of the Samuel/Susan line, but I still have many unanswered questions. Thank you! Yvonne Grimmer

My name is Kathleen RUHLEN. I live just east of Lima. I am doing research on my RUHLEN ancestors. I am in contact with an 80 year old cousin in California, whose grandfather, Will RUHLEN lived in Hardin County, died in Hardin Co. in Oct. of 1934. This cousin told me that there is a RUHLEN cemetery in Hardin County, however, after visiting your website I did not find it listed in your cemeteries section. Can you verify if this is correct or incorrect. Also, where can I go in Hardin county to look up cemetery information? I will appreciate any information you can provide. Thank you.

I am inquiring about my great grandfather,John HALEY, and his wife, Sara [ BARRETT ] . I was in Ohio this past Aug. for a family reunion and realized how little we knew of our relatives before us. The strangest thing happened to me as I was leaving my brothers house. An overwelming urge came over me to seek for my grandmothers grave site. I have been asking my brothers , on my few trips back home, of her location, and was told that they were unsure. It had been a long time since she had passed, but this time I had to find her. I searched a part of Marion Co. where I thought she was for four hours to no avail. Clouds and rain was all around, but none was where I was at a given time. It finally occured to me to check with the funeral home. I was only about three miles away at the closest part of my treck. My grandmother was in Hardin and not Marion Co. As I stood there at her feet not believing where I was, the sun came out giving me a warmness all over. I was given a copy of her death citificate and hadn't really looked at it until that time. She had died Aug. 12 ,1974 . My search was Aug. 11, 1998. I returned to McKendree cemetary the next day, flowers in hand, sensing my search had just begun. I visited the fantastic Hardin Co. Courthouse later not knowing what to look for but looking none the less. Started at engineering, went upstairs to browes though old deeds and was amazed to find John HALEY quite a few times listed. There I was looking at a part of history that maybe no one else in my family, since he signed his name, had seen. I didn't mean to go on so, but I wanted to give a little insite to my curiosity. My father was named after him and was never told anything about him. On my brief search around Kenton, I visited some local sites and felt homesick even though I have never lived there. I looked at a book at the engineering office and found land maps and a picture of his residence in 1879. It is what was once called, The Old Wheeler Tavern. John was the son of Patrick and Susan HALEY. Was married to Sara BARRETT. They had some children, one of whom was my grandfather Charles Edward, married to Mary Elizabeth PRICE, which will be another quest of my roots. If by this time I have not succeeded to bore you to sleep, maybe you might be able to answer a few questions for me. 1. Who was John Haley? 2. Who was Sara BARRETT? 3. Where can I do more research from my home in Virginia? Thank you very much for any help. I am planning my next vacation in the Hardin Co. area to help answer many other questions. If there is a need to contact me, feel free to do so. Charles Patrick Haley P.O.Box 4214 Va. Beach, Va. 23454

My maternal second great grandfather, Stephen J. SOAPER (SOPER, SOPHER) appears in the 1850 U.S. Census of Hardin Co., Buck Twnshp, Ohio, pg 328. He appears as Stephen Soaper age 24, farmer, born in NY. His wife Mary (Mary Catherine HATTERY) age 20, born in Ohio. And daughter Sarah (my 2nd ggmother) age 1, born in Ohio. John SOAPER (SOPER, SOPHER) age 76, a farmer, born in Ny also appears same page with Hannah age 67, born in Ny and a son Rowland age 19, born in Pa. I believe this is Stephen's father. Also appearing on the same page are Vanrensaler SOAPER age 30, a farmer, born in Ny; his wife Lucinda age 28, born Ohio; two daughters Ceila 3, Hannah 2 and a son Eliza 1/12 all born in Ohio. I believe Vanrensaler is also a son of John. I also believe that John descends from Henry Soper ,1640-1695 and Sarah (WATTLES) SOPER of Suffolk Co., Long Island, Ny.
